Peter Porter

Peter Porter was born in Brisbane and now lives in London. He is one of Australia's best loved poets. A friend to the greats - Philip Larkin, Seamus Heaney and Ted Hughes as well as to contemporary writers such as Julian Barnes and Martin Amis.

Porter has written more than twenty books of poetry, and edited many others. He has also been reviewer and contributer, on a regular basis, to a wide variety of newspapers and journals, as well as making frequent appearances on broadcast arts programmes.

Amongst the many awards and honours bestowed on Porter have been the Cholmondeley Award (1976), the Society of Authors Travelling Scholarship (1980), the Duff Cooper Prize (1984), the Whitbread Prize (1988), the Gold Medal of the Australian Literature Society (1990), the Age Poetry Prize (1997), and Emeritus Award of the Australia Council (1998).

His latest book is Afterburner, published by Picador.
